Color
One of the first tasks of the Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.) was to devise a

standard color grading system for diamonds. They reasoned that the best way to

establish a diamond's color was to compare the diamond of unknown color against a

diamond of known color. To do so, they established a diamond color master set. The

color master set was arranged on an alphabetical scale starting with the letter D for a

stone totally devoid of color and ending with Z for a stone with a strong yellowish tint.
Caret
This refers to the weight of the diamond in carats. One carat equals about 200 mgs.

100 points = 1 carat; .50 ct. = ½ carat; .25 ct = ¼ carat, etc.
